While our attention initiallylands on the man in the doorwayour eye is soon pulled down to thestrange shape on the pavement. Weknow it’s a dog but something aboutthe way it’s lying on the groundgives the image an air of the surreal. It looks almost like a discarded bit ofrug. It’s a funny image and as aresult fully embraces the absurdityof the best street photography.Regulars37 days20Inbox48Accessories61TechnicalSupport82Final AnalysisEach week we choose our favouritepicture on Facebook, Flickr,Twitter, Instagram or the reader gallery using#appicoftheweek. If you’re not sure whether yourcamera supports double exposure, do a quicksearch on the internet or check your camera’smanual. But many higher-end SLRs, such as theNikon D810 or Canon EOS 5D Mark III, offer thisfunction. Essentially this is a composite job, somuch will depend on the quality of the images youare combining.1For the first base image, pick something with astrongly defined outline, such as a face in profile orhead-and-shoulders shot. Youdon’t need a human subject, butthere’s something surreal aboutdouble exposures and people. You can deliberatelyunderexpose yoursubjects to create asilhouette, or choose to retainmore detail in the headshot. It’s important to shoot themagainst an unclutteredlight background.29 July 2016Iwww.amateurphotographer.co.ukIsubscribe 0330 333 1113pictureWinners announcedfor environmentalportraits contestEnvironmental portraits cantell us a great deal aboutcultures and individuals on apersonal level. Placing a personwithin a certain context candeliver all sorts of information andintroduce us to people we maynot otherwise encounter in ourday-to-day lives.
