Yet despite having shiftedcontainer-loads of point-and-shoot compacts, the company has so far failed to gain a footholdwith serious photographers. However, the new Samsung NX1 (tested onpages 46-51) may just change that, with aformidable spec sheet and a performance thatimpressed our technical team. At the other end ofthe scale, I love Cary Norton’s Legotron camera(pages 34-36). I’ve spent many happy hoursplaying with those coloured bricks with my kidsand often pondered the possibility of building aworking camera out of them, so I’m thrilled thatsomeone has made one and achieved such greatresults with it.Nigel Atherton, EditorJoin our Flickr groupat flickr.com/groups/amateurphotographerFollow uson Twitter@AP_MagazineIn this issue6Sony Alpha 7 IIWe take a first look at theupdate to Sony’s ground-breaking full-frame Alpha 71029 essential winterlandscape tipsFour top landscapephotographers provideexpert advice forshooting in the cold20Coveringthe worldBill Marr,NationalGeographic’screativedirector, discusses anew book featuring themagazine’s iconic covers26Lonely planetZoltan Bekefy explains howhe takes his minimalistblack & white images34Another brickin the wallA working camera madefrom Lego? Mostmodern DSLRs nowfeature a built-in black& white mode, whichenables you to shootmono images straight outof the camera. Activatingthis often-overlookedfeature is actually a greatway to challenge yourphotography skills, as ittakes away any relianceon bright colours to helpmake a shot interesting.Colours are transformedinto tones, which forcesyou to look at scenesin an entirely differentmanner. So, thisweekend, why not testyour photography skillsby stripping away thecolour from your photosto capture some raw andgritty mono imagery.1With all colour strippedaway, you’re going to haveto rely on elements suchas texture, tone and shape todraw the viewer’s eye into yourshot and make it appear visuallyinteresting. Keep an eye out forunusual shapes and patterns. When shooting black &white, the colour noisethat’s generated whenusing higher ISOs ceases to bea problem. Instead, it createsa colourless ‘grain’, which canbe used to add a gritty, film-likeappearance to your shots.CM1 UK datePanasonic is set to launch its LumixDMC-CM1 compact camera withAndroid in the UK this month.Panasonic says the CM1 is‘a camera with Android ratherthan a smartphone with a camera’.Expected to cost £799.99, the CM1 was initially only due tobe launched in France and Germany.4213 December 2014Iwww.amateurphotographer.co.ukIsubscribe 0844 848 0848pictureA stunning image ofSouth Koreans makingkimchi for the poorThis busy image comesfrom Getty photographerChung Sung-Jun.
