Indark concert halls or studios, even with high ISOs,autofocus can struggle and noise can become aproblem. A better solution is to use flashguns andwireless triggers, so the flashlights, rather than shutterspeed, freeze the action. It sounds complicated, but it’snot. Just note that you are unlikely to use such aset-up during a performance, so you might need toshoot a rehearsal or arrange a dedicated shoot. With afast flash burst, such as 1/40,000sec, the performerwill be well lit and sharp, but all else will be darkened.1If you can shoot a dancerat rehearsal, or are askedfor publicity shots, shootthe dancer against your ownportable black/darkbackground. It will need to bebig enough to absorb thedancer’s movements.ApologyIn the articleLenses for Selective Focusing(AP 30 July), weomitted to thank the following companies for their generousequipment loans that helped us to complete our lens tests: Graysof Westminster (www.graysofwestminster.co.uk) for the Nikon105mm f/2D AF DC, Hireacamera (www.hireacamera.com) for theCanon TS-E 90mm f/2.8, and The Leica Gallery (www.leica-storemayfair.co.uk) for the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95. Wewould like to thank all three companies for their generosity.4Mount your flashguns(two is ideal) on a tripodor light stand, thenchange to manual mode. Pickthe maximum flash sync speedfor your camera to avoid blur. Also, ensure your wirelesstriggers are working properly.213 August 2016Iwww.amateurphotographer.co.ukIsubscribe 0330 333 1113pictureCapturing the sense ofreal urgency in an imageIn AP 6 August wehighlighted the winningimages of UK photographerDougie Wallace who took the prizefor the best series for streetphotography in the first annualMagnum Photography Awards, inassociation with LensCulture.
