Now's the time. What are you waiting for?Prices to come down?!ebruary has not been agood month. OK, so it'swinter, with many stillfeeling the financial hangover fromChristmas and not muchhappening in general, but February2015 has been beyond the pale, purely in terms of friends lost.First was Roger Butterworth, agreat stalwart of the scene. I knewRoger, though I can't claim to haveever been that close with him;however, when someone's passingknocks the whole scene sidewayslike that, you know he must havebeen someone very special whomeant a great deal tovery many people.Likewise, aroundthe same time,Bev Arnisonpassed away. Hewas anotherguy I knew tosay hello to,though I'm toldwe have had someprotracted (ifunintelligible)conversations late at night in thebar at Shakespeare County. Thisguy was very much a fixture atShakey, as much a part of thefurniture as the grandstandor the bar. Ever cheerful,he's another face that willbe missed. Then, very shortlyafterwards, we lostMel McClaine. Melwas one of thosetremendous peopleon the scene thatmost would describeas “quite a character”,while those who knewher would call her “asmad as a bucket of frogs.”She was usually seen in herPlymouth Duster, often towinga caravan, and almost invariablywith at least one of her big, daftGerman Shepherds in tow, at showsand race tracks all over the country. She was one of those people who, even if the event was a completewash-out and everyone was up to“You'rehere for agood time;not a longtime”their armpits in mud, could stillmanage to have a riotously goodlaugh. She also ran a hot rodfanzine called The Rooster, asatirical and bonkers view of therodding and racing scene. Some years ago, I was goingthrough a tough time. The bones ofmy arse were on the bones of theirarse, but Mel helped me out, gaveme a place to stay and a hand toget back on my feet … to mix ametaphor. That's just the sort ofperson she was, and for her friendsthere are no lengths she wouldn'thave gone to to help out. I owe hera great deal.Friends like Mel are thesort of friends you'relikely to make on therod and race scene. Goto an event and you'llmeet folks from allwalks (or, in somecases, staggers) of life, and there's everychance you'll meet yourlifelong bestest buddy there. Many people already have, anddoubtless many of you could tell atale or two about your best friendwho you met through your mutuallove of American cars, drag racingor whatever. There are a number of tweehomilies I could use right here -“carpe diem”, “can't take it withyou”, “none of us are getting anyyounger”, “there are no pockets ina shroud” etc – but the one I'mgoing to select is “you're here for agood time; not a long time.” Ifthere's one thing we can learn fromthe three people mentioned aboveit's that you should live your lifewhile you can. Do what you love, surround yourself with friends, enjoy what you can, while you can.Get that car you always wanted, join in with the scene, you justmight meet a bunch of people whowill matter that much to you.Roger, Bev and Mel all meant a hellof a lot to a hell of a lot of people, and the scene – and the world – willbe the poorer for their absence.
